Ai Weiwei - this is one of the most famous and authoritative artists in the world of our time. He himself is of Chinese origin, and his work is inextricably linked with the author's home country. For example, his new job, Stacked, dedicated to the bicycle - the main mode of transport in the Middle Kingdom.
The People's Republic of China holds the world record for the number of bicycles both per capita and in absolute number. This personal transport is indispensable there either in rural areas or in cities. Therefore, it is not surprising that Ai Weiwei considers bicycles to be one of the symbols of his home country.
His new work, Stacked, consists of 760 bicycles assembled into columns and arranged in the main exhibition space of the Galleria Continua in San Gimignano, Italy.
Moreover, the Forever brand bicycle was chosen as the material, which is the most widespread model of two-wheeled transport in the People's Republic of China!
Galleria Continua is a renowned contemporary art venue in Italy. In 2005, a branch office opened in Beijing, marking the beginning of a close interaction between Italian and Chinese cultures. It is within the framework of this art synthesis in San Gimignano that the first personal exhibition of the artist Ai Weiwei is taking place in the Apennines.
It should be noted that Ai Weiwei has already addressed the "bicycle" theme in his previous work. Back in November 2011, he created the Forever Bicycles installation, consisting of 1200 Forever bicycles. This work was presented at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum in Taiwan. But, apparently, this topic is grateful and voluminous. So it's not a sin to return to it a few more times!
