New York-based artist Yuken Teruya is known for growing beautiful gardens. But these gardens are not simple, but … No, not gold, but paper, which does not make them any less interesting the way they were grown, or rather, cut out of old used paper, or discarded paper bags.
Yuken Teruya carves beautiful trees from waste material such as cardboard toilet paper rolls, shopping bags, and newspapers. His art can be captured in the transitional moments when the paper bag evolves into a tree, and entire gardens sprout from the old New York Times.
Skillfully using everyday objects and things, Yuken Teruya transforms their meaning for impact on modern society and culture. By carving trees out of paper bags and wrappers, he creates intricate and detailed works of art, small and mesmerizing worlds that convey a message of whiter across a wide range of issues.

In creating his paper gardens, the artist cleverly draws our attention to the effect of consumerism and globalization - hinting at the depletion of natural resources, the disappearance of cultural traditions and individuality. Working with discarded paper bags, gift bags and postal wraps, Teruya creates delicate installations where a sculpture is carved from the same paper form in which it is placed.
Yuken Teruya was born in 1973 in Okinawa. Attended School of Art in New York in 2001. In 2007, his personal exhibition took place. His works can be seen throughout the United States, Europe, Japan.
