Every person from time to time thinks about the meaning of his life. Someone more often, someone less often. And the artist Candy Chang within the framework of his project "Before I Die …" invites ordinary New Orleans to think about this.
Of course, a person's search for the meaning of life is not easy. It is very difficult to decide why exactly you were born, what you strive for, what you really want to achieve in your life. But everything becomes much easier if you add to this search the concept of imminent death.
That's what Candy Chang did. He hung it on the wall of an abandoned house at 900 Marigny St. in New Orleans a board where everyone can talk about their innermost dreams. "Before I Die …": This is how every line on this board begins. And anyone can take a crayon and add this phrase in accordance with their views on life.
The great thing is that all these inscriptions will be anonymous. So no one will know who actually left this or that wish. But on the other hand, it is clear how people living in this area or who happened to be here by chance live. It turns out a real mosaic of aspirations, telling about the local inhabitants much more than omniscient statistics.
It turns out that if you put a person in front of the factor of his inevitable death, he becomes very sincere. He talks about what is really the most important thing in life for him. And the experience of New Orleans has shown that people want him to live completely different things. Someone wants to speed up to 200 miles per hour in a car, someone wants to finish school, someone wants to open their own business, someone wants to visit Rome, and someone wants to take a walk at their daughter's graduation.
However, all these dreams and hopes depend little on the person himself. After all, it is enough to go through the rain for these wishes to be washed away by water, and in their place completely new ones from completely different people will soon appear. This is how the laws of our world work.
