We've all seen them in bustling streets, in parks, or in front of monuments and places that are popular with tourists - street actors posing like statues. Some whistle when someone passes by, some start to move when you throw money. For some it is work, for others it is entertainment, but whatever the reason, being a living statue is incredibly difficult, it requires a lot of strength and creativity.
Living statues can be seen all over the world and are especially popular in the European street theater tradition. It is more than just standing, it is necessary to fulfill their role according to their own script. Many street actors are diligent in their costume design and put a lot of heart into their performances.
Not everyone can be a living statue, because this will require a lot of physical strength and mental attitude, not to mention the ability to withstand bad weather conditions.
Some living statues make art extreme. Antonia Santos entered the Guinness Book of Records after standing still for 15 hours, 2 minutes and 55 seconds in 1988. In 2003, he broke his own record by standing still for 20 hours, 11 minutes and 38 seconds.
Sometimes the actors are so able to get used to the image that it is almost impossible to say that this is actually a living person. The pigeons didn't seem to notice the difference either.
