Guido Mocafico's photographs from the Serpens series evoke mixed feelings. On the one hand, it just so happened that most people are afraid of snakes and do not even want to look at them. But at the same time, one cannot but admit that these creatures are simply amazing and magnificent in the variety of their colors. Snakes - the way Mokafino showed them to us - resemble peculiar pictures, looking at which you feel delight and horror at the same time.
What creatures instill in people as much fear, horror and disgust as snakes do? Although only a few of the 2,700 known species of these reptiles are truly dangerous to humans, prejudice is stronger than common sense. Against this background, Guido Mokafiko's studies of the aesthetic side of snakes reveal the strange strength and beauty of these creatures, which in various societies are usually called demons or deities, secret protectors or ancient ancestors.
"Serpens" is not the first work of Mokafiko, which depicts from an unusual side creatures to whom it is customary to feel horror or disgust. Along with snakes, this list includes earlier photographs of jellyfish and spiders. Apparently, Guido is not only not afraid of all this living creature himself, but also tries to convince the viewer: the terrible can be beautiful.
Guido Mokafiko is a photographer with Italian roots who was born in Switzerland in 1962. He has worked with international publications such as Numero, Vogue, Big, The Face, Self-Service and Wallpaper on numerous occasions. In addition, the world's leading brands - Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Clinique, Shiseido, Hermes - turned to Guido for help in creating advertising campaigns. The photographer currently lives in Paris.
