The chameleon has the unique ability to change color to blend in with its surroundings for self-defense. A rattlesnake can hide most of its body in the sand, waiting for its prey. There are so many animals that have learned to adapt to their environment, defending themselves from enemies and fighting for survival. But why do people disguise themselves, turning into invisible ones?
Chinese artist Liu Bolin, master of urban camouflage, presented a series of creative works about people-chameleons, where he made ordinary people of Beijing disappear and disappear into a huge city. His series of works is a study of human nature and animal instincts, where ordinary people in China are painted and disguised as their environment. The aim of this project by artist Liu Bolin is to show how the urban environment affects the people who live in it. People who pass by a standing invisible person often do not realize that a real living person can be there until he moves.
Liu Bolin says that the skill of camouflage requires a lot of patience from him, because you need to carefully paint the posing model, and then take a photo, choosing the right and correct angle. In general, everything takes about 10 hours.
The work of the Chinese artist is also a silent protest against the government's persecution of the artist. In 2005, the Chinese authorities closed Liu Bolin's studio in Beijing. "The situation for artists in China is extremely difficult" - Liu Bolin admits. "The violent liquidation of my studio actually became the impetus for the appearance of a series of works" Hide and Seek in the City. "Living in communist China, the artist does not feel very comfortable, he cannot always control his own life Art helps him to unravel the chaos in life, he hopes that his work will force people to rethink how they live and what problems they face.
Liu Bolin was born in Shandong in 1973. Graduated from the prestigious Faculty of Sculpture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Shanghai. His work is on display in Europe, the United States and China.
