There are many artists in the world who create works of art from old glass bottles. But the creativity of the Nigerian El Anatsui at the same time it is connected with them, and radically different from them. After all, he does pictures from … tin lids from these bottles.
Historically, glass and plastic bottles are rarely destroyed after their first use. Most often they become recyclable and returned to factories. But the same cannot be said about the lids from such containers, in the overwhelming majority of cases they are disposable, and therefore immediately go to the trash bin or to the landfill. Unless, of course, they fall into the hands of some contemporary artist like American Molly B. Right or Nigerian El Anatsui.
El Anatsui has been collecting used tin lids all over Lagos for years. He even set up a whole network of similar gathering, consisting of children and teenagers looking for this material in the streets. The artist pays his suppliers money for each cap they bring. He also has an agreement with canning factories, which give him defective consignments.
From the collected tin covers, El Anatsui creates very unusual paintings, which the artist himself calls "tapestries." It takes the author about two months of work to produce one such work of visual art - this process is very painstaking and complicated. After all, preparing tin lids and combining them with each other is not as easy as it might seem.
El Anatsui's work graces not only his studio and art galleries around the world. They are in great demand among large companies looking to hang such unusual works of art in their offices. And the artist does not hesitate to decorate the gray, nondescript streets of Lagos with the help of his tapestries.
