Rob Milam creates marquetry portraits. At first glance, they can be mistaken for painted, but in fact, all these works are made of plywood.
Marquetry is a mosaic made of thin plates of precious woods, which are glued onto a base of simple woods. This technique, which was especially popular during the Renaissance, later turned out to be practically forgotten and recently only begins to revive in the work of contemporary artists, one of which is Rob Milam.
In principle, the author can create any images, but most of all he loves to work with portraits of people. The most difficult thing is to choose the color of the wood texture: based on the original black and white photo, Rob Milam uses from four to sixteen types of plywood in one piece. Although wood does not provide such wide opportunities as other materials, according to the author, its shades and textures are enough to create full-fledged portraits. Rob tries to use only natural colors of wood and only occasionally uses artificially colored plywood in blue or green to recreate the iris of the eye.
“Wood is as familiar and close to me as the air I breathe, so every day I try to complement my palette with new shades, shapes, flashes, making it completely unique,” says Rob Milam. At the very beginning of his career, the author realized that only working with wood inspires him and seems to be truly important. Therefore, Rob tries to maximize the time he spends with the tree and minimize the time spent on anything else. According to the author, it is the marquetry that gives him the opportunity to show all the abilities that the Lord has awarded him.
