“An iceberg grows out of the fog like an icy mountain. And it carries it along the endless seas … This is how we used to imagine the Arctic glaciers - snow-white blocks migrating in the ocean. But in fact icebergs are different - not only snow-white, but also striped!

Despite the fact that "painted" icebergs are not a unique phenomenon, scientists have not been interested in them for a long time. However, in 2008, during a scientific expedition 1,700 miles south of Cape Town, South Africa and 660 miles north of Antarctica, explorer Oyvind Tenjen first noticed an ice floe decorated with multicolored lines.

Blue, brown, green or even yellow - there are more than enough colors in Mother Nature's palette! Most often there are "turquoise" patterns, the secret of their formation is simple: the glacier looks white due to the fact that there are many air bubbles in its structure, but the blue stripes are fresh water frozen in the iceberg cracks!

Dark streaks are dust and volcanic ash that is deposited on the iceberg during its formation. Such glaciers are "born" like ice caps on the tops of volcanoes, and when they are heated, they "slide" into the water.

"Emerald" stripes are "inserts" of old ice, which does not contain air bubbles. This ice is frozen sea water, which for centuries accumulated in the ice crevices of the plume, and when the glacier broke, it came out.

Icebergs have long attracted the attention of people: they fascinate with their beauty and frighten with the unknown. So far, only researchers can see live "striped" ice blocks, but it is quite possible that over time they can become attractive tourist sites. A striking example is the Perito Moreno glacier dam, located in South Patagonia in the North of Argentina. It is famous for the fact that from time to time amazed tourists who come here from all over the world can observe its break!
