Painful, expensive, but beautiful - the modern widespread opinion about body hair removal … But when was the “hairless norm” of beauty born and why? Scientists, show business stars and, of course, feminists are now revising it. And the results were not long in coming.
The twentieth century turned out to be the most intolerant of hair on the body of women. After all, many centuries before that, they were not a hindrance to beauty. In Europe, the attitude to the issue was fueled by the idea of the exclusivity of the "white" race. So, in the 18th century it was believed that only savage Indians could have skin without hair.
History has preserved information that Egyptian women tried to get rid of their hair most carefully, primarily for hygienic reasons. However, harmful substances were used for this: arsenic or quicklime. The prototype of the modern razor appears at the disposal of women in ancient Roman society. It is noteworthy that at the beginning of the twentieth century, from a technical point of view, the issue almost did not budge. Ladies continued to use pumice stones, sandpaper that traumatize the skin, and often unsafe products such as boot wax. There is a glaring case when an innocent procedure claimed the lives of several thousand women: the composition of the depilatory cream included rat poison. Together with their hair, the unfortunate women lost their hearing and sight. A little later, in the 1960s - 1970s, hormonal preparations were offered for "hair" therapy, which also had a detrimental effect on health.
Despite all the inconveniences, fashion is spreading rapidly. And the reason is that the skirts are getting shorter and the stockings are getting thinner. The less chaste and closed to men's eyes women became, the more persistently society dictated a new rule - shave your legs. Popular culture also pushed fashion. After World War II, everyone admired the beauty and relaxedness of Betty Grable. Her long legs in a short skirt were smooth. During this period, the cosmetic industry and advertising became more active, which instilled the belief that unsmooth legs are embarrassing and ridiculous.
The modern view on the procedure is as follows: hair removal is a form of social manipulation of a woman. This is where the opinions of sociologists and feminists coincide, who see in the norm of beauty only a way to impose on an independent woman a sense of her own inferiority. Therefore, it is no coincidence that lately even public figures feel more and more free in this matter.
Even top models take liberties. The famous beauty Tyra Banks ignores claims about unshaven legs.
The world famous singer Celine Dion only laughed in response to media criticism of her neglect of leg hair.
Shave or not shave - this issue is actively discussed at the level of social networks. The ambiguity of the decisions indicates that the time has come to seriously think about the stereotypes of beauty.
