In the fall of 2010, a man-made disaster struck Hungary. Then a million cubic meters of liquid toxic waste broke through a dam near an aluminum plant and flooded huge spaces, including several settlements. This sad event is dedicated to series of photographs The Lineby Spanish photographer Palindromo Meszaros.

All kinds of natural and human-made disasters often become a source of inspiration for artists from all over the world. Examples include a series of photographs of abandoned ships on the former bottom of the now dry Aral Sea, installations Eclipse and Waiting for climate change.

A series of works by Palindromo Meszaros The Line is also devoted to the catastrophe caused by human negligence. We are talking about an accident at an aluminum plant in the area of the Hungarian city of Hayk, as a result of which ten people died, and huge areas were flooded with toxic red sludge.

The name The Line itself alludes to the red line that remained on the walls of houses, tree trunks and other objects after the sludge came off or was removed from the crash site. It symbolizes the consequences that will affect the lives of people and nature in an area that has been flooded with toxic waste for a long time.

The red line is a scar on the body of settlements and natural objects that will not disappear soon.

Palindromo Meszaros himself explains the idea of his series of photographs The Line: “I have always wondered what remains after the news ceases to be something“new”, goes down in history, when the media forget about this problem. These photographs were taken six months after the Holocaust, when information about it left the pages of newspapers, and only Line remained."
