Self-immolation is one of the most radical types of political protest in the entire history of Mankind. He was especially "popular" in the twentieth century, but even now there are isolated cases. Here are self-immolations for political reasons and dedicated to fire installation Le Pyromanecreated by a Lebanese-French artist named Ali Cherri.
Matches now and then become part of certain works of modern art. Examples include match photos by Stanislav Aristov or match insects by Kyle Bean.
Another piece of art that uses matches was created by a French artist of Lebanese origin named Ali Sherri. An unusual work titled Le Pyromane is devoted to political protest, namely, self-immolation.
Ali Sherri was impressed by the self-immolation of Tunisian street vendor Mohammed Bouazizi, whose radical act was one of the causes of the revolution in Tunisia and, subsequently, the entire Arab Spring - a series of revolutions and riots that rocked North Africa and the Middle East in 2011-2012.
Then, in December 2010, the Tunisian authorities tried to explain the self-immolation of Mohammed Bouazizi not by his protracted conflict with the security forces, but by a psychological disorder consisting in an obsessive desire to set fire to something. Such a statement by officials was precisely the spark that ignited the flame of the Tunisian Revolution, which subsequently spread to the entire Arab world.
The installation Le Pyromane by Ali Sherri is an inscription "I am not a pyromaniac!", Made in French from several hundred ordinary matches. Moreover, these matches were set on fire, and therefore burned down in just a couple of minutes.
