Calligraphy in China has long been considered a real art, a sophisticated form of painting. Contemporary sculptor Zheng Lu uses hieroglyphs as the basis for his creations. "Lace from hieroglyphs", made of stainless steel, not only gives the figures an original look, but also fills these sculptures with additional meanings.
For his work, Zheng Lu most often uses classical Chinese poetry and prose. One of his most famous sculptures is a “frozen” splash of water. For her, the artist chose the lines of the poem "Wan Zhi Shui" (which literally means "Playing with water"), written by the poet Bai Juyi from the Tang dynasty.
Of course, it is quite difficult to read the lines of the poems, from a distance the sculptures look delicate, but at the same time, the text can be viewed only from a close distance. In addition, Zheng Lu skillfully uses a variety of fonts to complicate the puzzle, because, according to the author himself, it would not be interesting to immediately guess what is encrypted in a particular sculpture.
For his works, Zheng Lu used more than 200 thousand hieroglyphs. He developed a thorough knowledge of calligraphy since childhood. The family loved to read, instilled in the child a love of classical literature, the parents were people of encyclopedic knowledge, and the father always insisted that Zheng do calligraphy. These skills came in handy for Zheng Lu over the years. The “textual” component makes his sculptures unique works of art endowed with deep aesthetic meaning.
By the way, let us remind you that the famous sculptor Jaume Plensa is a recognized fan of experimenting with the alphabet. True, unlike Zheng Lu, he places letters randomly, and the scale of his work is much larger than that of his Chinese counterpart.
