Long hair has always been considered a symbol of female beauty and pride. The more curls, the better. It was thanks to their chic hair that the seven Sutherland sisters gained worldwide fame in the Victorian era (Sutherland). They wanted to see their curls with their own eyes, touch, cut off for good luck. Well, the sisters managed to "put together" a fortune on their hair.
Sisters Sutherland were born in the family of a poor farmer in the vicinity of New York. Nevertheless, their father forced the daughters to learn to sing, dance, play various musical instruments. With beautiful voices and extraordinary appearance (very long hair), the girls had great success, performing in the Barnum and Bailey circus.
Over time, the head of the Fletcher Sutherland family decided to benefit much more from his daughters' amazing hair. They say that their family used a special tonic-elixir for hair care, thanks to which women were able to grow such luxurious hair. The Sutherland family launched a whole line of hair care products, and the girls were the prime example of their "miraculous" effects.
Needless to say, every lady of the Victorian era was ready to purchase any means, just to have beautiful thick hair. In 1890 alone, 2.5 million bottles of hair care products were sold. The family's income exceeded US $ 3 million. It was a colossal amount of money at the time.
However, the huge profits did not cover all of the family's expenses. The sisters loved having an army of lackeys, diamonds, mansions. Gradually the wealth dwindled. Fearing that someone might encroach on their fortune, the four sisters never married. Continuation of the family was able to provide only one of the seven.
The Victorian era is very often surprising, and sometimes shocking modern inhabitants. In the second half of the 19th century, the Victorians had a new tradition is to take photographs of dead people. It is believed that at that time the services of a photographer were very expensive, and not many could afford such a luxury during their lifetime. However, death and the desire to do something meaningful for the last time, connected with a loved one, forced them to fork out for the picture.
