The whole world knows the actress who played the unbalanced villain Cruella de Ville, but besides this role, there are many interesting works in the filmography of Glenn Close. True, she herself admits that they could have compiled an excellent manual on psychiatry. This woman proves to the whole world that beauty is not the main thing for an actor, because, having a very peculiar appearance, she often plays beauties and conquerors of men's hearts. In fact, everything is about the same: Glenn was married four times. Now the former Cruella is already 73 years old, she continues to actively act in films, and spends her free time surrounded by … her beloved dogs.
Glenn Close was born in the spring of 1947 in Connecticut. The actress can boast of a truly aristocratic origin: among her ancestors were representatives of the English royal house and the President of the United States Ulysses Grant. Therefore, perhaps, Glenn looks so organically in the images of aristocrats - her childhood was spent in the highest circles. Then, however, the parents moved to the Congo, the father was the personal doctor of the president of the country and ran the clinic, and a completely different life began for the future actress.
The early years were a very difficult period for the girl. When she was seven years old, her parents became active members of the conservative missionary sect Moral Rearmament. Little Glenn was forbidden to watch TV and communicate with people. It was possible to read books, but only certain ones. Today, the famous actress tries not to remember that time, but says that she perfectly understands people under psychological pressure, because her own psyche was really broken until the age of 15.
Liberation from the heavy oppression of morality was then replaced by another prison: the parents sent the girl to a Swiss boarding school, where, according to Glenn's recollections, "even the sewer pipes were entwined with barbed wire, so that the children would not run away." She also recalls this time with a shudder. Only at the age of 22, after returning to America and going to college, Glenn began to live for real. The girl first went on stage and realized that this was her destiny. She graduated from an educational institution with an original dual specialization: acting and anthropology, and immediately began acting in the local theater.
A few years later, in 1974, Close made her Broadway debut. The actress sings beautifully, and one of the first successes in the theater for her was the role of Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd-Webber's musical Sunset Boulevard. By the way, to this day, according to tradition, Glenn sings the national anthem every year at the opening ceremony of the baseball season in New York. Theatrical activity brought the actress fame and three Tony awards. However, the main turn in her career was waiting for her after 35 years, when she was offered her first role in a movie.
Her very first role in the film "The World According to Garp" was nominated for an Oscar. Glenn Close often has to play strange women - unbalanced, with a difficult fate and a multifaceted psychological portrait, sometimes obvious psychopaths, but she treats this with humor. Interestingly, the actress was nominated for an Oscar seven times - the last attempt was in 2019 - but she never received the coveted statuette. In terms of the number of nominations without a victory, she became the champion among women, although the talented actress has enough other cinematic awards.
Glenn Close's most famous film work is Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons and 101 Dalmatians, and from 2007 to 2012 she starred in the television drama Skirmish. The film "Mysterious Albert Nobbs" is very unusual, which is worth watching only for the sake of the great performance of the main character. The story of a woman who is forced to pass herself off as a man all her life is really interesting.
Close herself was the initiator of the creation of the film. She has played Albert Nobbs in the play of the same name since 1982, and spent 15 years getting George Moore's story to be filmed. By the way, the transformation into men is given to the actress without difficulty. In the movie "Captain Hook", Glenn is also unrecognizable, she looks so convincing in her beard.
In the personal life of the famous actress, a complete leapfrog is going on: four times she was married to very different people. She entered into her last marriage at the age of 59 and even moved to live with her chosen one (chemist and biophysicist) in the hinterland of Maine. The fans breathed a sigh of relief, hoping that their pet had finally found the long-awaited happiness, but nine years later, the idyll ended, the couple divorced. The actress has a daughter from her third marriage, the girl follows in the footsteps of her mother, and sometimes in theater and cinema they play the same characters together in different age periods.
After seventy years, Glenn Close remains the same in demand in the cinema: in 2017, for example, the actress starred in four films, and her last work - the film "Country Elegy" - was released in 2020. On his Twitter page, Glenn shares the news with fans and often uploads photos with her pets, because in fact, the actress simply loves dogs all her life.
Glenn Close has been friends with another beautiful Hollywood star Meryl Streep for many years. Oddly enough, the two actresses are often confused, and they love to joke about it. Meryl is also 70 years old. At this age, the First Lady of Hollywood learned to "smooth out wrinkles in the brain."
