Prominent American artist and photographer Chuck Close has been a leading figure in contemporary art since the early 1970s. Close's work is associated with photorealism, or superrealism, in which the artist has been working for over 30 years, creating his large-format portraits, which are the link between the representational systems of painting and photography.

Chuck Coles' paintings do not lend themselves to digital processing, they are all painted in the old traditional way - by hand. He was painting at a time when no one knew about possible digital manipulations. His creative process is laborious and time-consuming. It can take several months to create one painting. Chuck Close developed a new approach and technique for painting human faces, which radically changed the definition of the modern portrait genre. It all starts with the fact that the artist transfers the Polaroid photograph to the canvas, traces it into squares, outlining the boundaries of tonal transitions, and using a brush and acrylic paints, he fills the surface with circles of different rich colors. Close up, his paintings look like a bright abstract mosaic, but as soon as you step back a couple of meters, faces emerge from the squares.

The first painting, painted using this method, was a black and white self-portrait of the artist, painted by him in 1968, on which he worked for four months. Then Chuck Close created seven more black and white portraits, and even later a series of color images appeared. Among his portrayed are members of the artist's family, friends and even such famous personalities as Kate Moss, Cindy Sherman, Lorna Simpson, Philip Glass, Richard Serra. The dimensions of his paintings sometimes reach two meters in height.

Chuck Close currently lives and paints in Bridgehampton, New York. The artist is paralyzed as a result of a spinal injury, but he still continues to create, tying a paintbrush to his hand, and his studio is specially equipped so that the master does not feel inconvenience and can safely enjoy the creative process.
