It is impossible not to mention the famous gondolas. The length of the Venetian boat is 11 meters, width - 1, 42 meters, weight - about 600 kilograms. The gondola can accommodate 6 people. It can only be operated by 1 person located at the stern. By the way, the gondola is asymmetrical. Its left side is 24 centimeters wider than the right, which allows you to steer the boat with one oar.
The city is located on 118 islands separated from each other by 117 canals. You can get to the desired place only by water or across the bridge (of which there are 400 units in the city). Many houses in Venice are built on Russian larch piles. This wood was not chosen by chance. The fact is that Russian larch does not deteriorate under water and perfectly withstands the dampness that prevails in the city on the water for 12 months a year.
They are not afraid of constant stay in the water and gondolas, the total number of which today is 425 pieces. By the way, recently the first woman gondolier, Alexandra Hai, appeared in Venice. She was born into a family of hereditary gondoliers and could not choose another profession for herself. Other women in Venice, unlike Alexandra, choose more traditional pursuits for themselves. They sell souvenirs, fish, raise children, and during breaks prepare for the annual carnival, which attracts thousands of people from all over the world.
