Among art critics and art lovers, there has long been a debate about primitivism as a style in artistic creation. This painting, which originated in the 19th century, evokes a double attitude towards it. Therefore, today it is not surprising that many have a well-grounded question: "Have not contemporary artists played with this very primitivism?" Indeed, it is one thing when such pictures are painted by people, so to speak, "from the people" who do not have a special education. And the other is the primitivists who graduated from various art educational institutions and work in a popular fashion. Today, in our review, we will focus on just such an artist. Meet: Gennady Shlykov and his gallery of amazingly kind paintings.
Primitivism as a simplification of the world
Naive art (primitivism) always included a deliberate simplification of the picture, which made its forms primitive and easy to perceive. It is similar to the creativity of children, rock paintings of primitive people, as well as ancient icon painting, ethnic motives, or popular prints.
By the way, such avant-garde artists as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, Natalia Goncharova, Marc Chagall and many other masters of the brush of the last century drew inspiration from folk art, also related to primitive art. They created their works, included in the golden fund of world painting, based on various types of that very naive art, stylizing it, each in its own way.
Therefore, some modern painters are not ashamed to use the primitivism techniques of venerable artists of the past in their work. They skillfully stylize this or that kind of it and apply the term “neo-primitivism” to its definition. Members of the Russian art associations "Jack of Diamonds" and "Donkey's Tail" were the first to belong to this style.
Our whole life is a theater
Wonderful, fabulous paintings by Gennady Shlykov are so narrative and lyrical that they can be used to write fairy tales. And this is not for a catchphrase … Light and naive, causing sadness and a smile, the artist's works, first of all, amaze with their style. The hand of the master is immediately felt, who, by means of a primitive reproduction of the world, created his own author's handwriting.
His characters are fabulous, literary and fictional images, literally saturated with positive and soul-warming warmth. They cause a sincere smile in the viewer and literally forever sink into the visual memory.
The seven deadly sins
I would like to dwell on one of the paintings of the artist Gennady Shlykov, who decided to place the seven deadly sins on one canvas. And how much he succeeded, you judge.
A few words about the artist
Gennady Aleksandrovich Shlykov was born in 1957 in the village of Tserlevo, Ryazan Region. At one time he graduated from the Moscow Art School and the School-Studio of Informal Art. Since 1990, Gennady Shlykov has been a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. Later he became a member of the National Union of Artists of Ukraine. Since 1996 - a constant participant of the Art-Manege (Russia). For the last twenty years he has been living and working in Ukraine, in the city of Nikopol, near Zaporozhye.
Shlykov's exhibitions were held with great success throughout his creative career in Ukraine, Russia, Japan, Italy, USA, Turkey, Germany, Czech Republic and Finland. Today his works are in the collections of galleries and in private collections in 27 countries of the world. Some of the master's creations were acquired by the Ministries of Culture of Russia and Ukraine. Shlykov's paintings are in the private collections of A. Makarevich, A. Kutikov, the Marquis De Lito (Italy) and many other celebrities. I think this says a lot …
And, finally, I would like to emphasize that when an artist puts his soul into his works, then, of course, they will live forever and give minutes of joy to more than one generation of viewers, regardless of what type, genre, style experts attribute them to.
