The British have long honored flowers red poppy- for them it is not just a flower, but a symbol of the memory of those who died during world wars and other armed conflicts. It is believed that this tradition was born during the First World War, when many of the dead comrades had to be buried right on the battlefield, and after a while those places were completely covered with a carpet of poppies, as red as the spilled blood of soldiers. The fact is that poppy seeds can sleep for a long time in untouched land, but you just have to dig it up, and they will immediately wake up. V Remembrance Daywhich the UK celebrates on November 11th, these flowers are visible everywhere, but 2011 saw right on the floor of St Paul's Cathedral in London 5000 red poppies turned into a gigantic themed installation. If you look at the installation, standing next to it, the work looks like flowers scattered chaotically on the floor. But if you go higher and look at the installation from top to bottom, you can see that red flowers form the picture: portraits of three child soldiers, one in the form of World War II, and the other two from more modern conflicts.
Poppy installation author, British artist Ted Harrison, with its art project draws attention to the problem of child soldiers who died in world wars on a par with adult defenders of the fatherland. The artist says that despite the fact that the UN convention prohibits the conscription of persons under the age of 18, in many countries it is simply ignored. According to experts, there are about 250,000 children in the world who are in the military, and a third of them are girls.
"I really hope that people who see this installation will feel pain and fear for the innocent children whom their native state literally betrayed by handing them weapons instead of toys and sending them to certain death," says Ted Harrison of his unique painting of 5000 poppies.
