It often happens that on the site acquired for the construction of a house or summer cottage with a garden and a vegetable garden, there are unevenness in the relief. Ravines, slopes and slopes, shores of water bodies - all these features of the terrain create difficulties due to the likelihood of landslides and soil shifts. Therefore, it is important to provide for the strengthening of the soil in such areas.
Criteria for choosing a method of strengthening the soil
There are different ways to strengthen slopes and slopes, the choice of which depends on
groundwater level;
geological features of the soil.
For more details, see the page
Natural ways
If the angle of inclination of the site is small, then natural strengthening is used - planting of shrubs and trees, as well as ground cover plants. When planting is difficult, it is often used to dig concrete blocks, stones, logs and structures made of boards into the ground. Any of these methods can be organized as an element of landscape design and made to decorate the site.
Artificial ways
If the angle of inclination is large, it will be necessary to use artificial structures for internal reinforcement and soil strengthening. These types of structures include:
- geogrids;
- gabions;
- biomats and geomats;
- geotextile;
- geogrid.
A combination of several of these methods is often used. This increases the load-bearing capacity of the slope.
A geogrid is a square grid. It is spread on a site with a steep slope and covered with rubble, stone and soil with a total thickness of at least 20 cm.
Gabions are hexagonal mesh boxes made of double twisted steel wire. This ensures high strength characteristics of the structure.
Biomats and geomats are the same in use, but differ in composition. For the first type, coconut and straw fibers are used, for the second, layers of polypropylene gratings. Biomats and geomats are spread on the ground and sown with plant seeds, which germinate easily due to the loose structure of the mats and thus strengthen the ground.
Geotextile is a durable material made of polypropylene or polyester fibers that is highly water permeable. It is pulled onto the surface to be strengthened, secured with anchors and, after backfilling with soil, is decorated with plants, tiles and stones.
Features of the geogrid application
Geogrid is a polymer band structure with honeycomb-like sections, which are filled with soil, gravel, crushed stone and stones for strengthening. When filled with soil, lawn grass and flowers are planted on it. In the case of a strong slope and there is no need for landscaping, it is covered with gravel, crushed stone and stones. This well prevents the gradual destruction of slopes and slopes.
The geogrid is used in two ways:
applied directly to the ground.
The site is pre-cleaned of plants, leveled and compacted the soil as best as possible. The geogrid is environmentally friendly, UV resistant and more durable than the geogrid. There is also a geogrid with and without perforation between cells. The first is used when soil drainage is necessary. Geogrid is a reliable way to reinforce slopes and slopes with almost any incline.

Geometric shapes made of sand and soil: original floors by Elvira Wersche
A substance like sand is ideal for art - free-flowing, light, colorful. And travelers sometimes bring bags of sand and earth from different parts of the world as a keepsake. “No memory, it's time to create” - this is probably what the German artist Elvira Wersche thinks of, who makes original floors from sand and soil from all over the world, instead of stuffing chests of drawers with these bags
"Penitent sinners" on the slopes of the Andes
Penitentes is a natural phenomenon of amazing beauty. This is the name for the high spiers made of snow, which in the Andes can reach a height of several meters. These crystal spiers received a specific name due to the fact that from a distance their cluster resembles a procession in white robes. Literally, "penitentes" means "repentant sinners"
How to effectively prepare for university entrance
In recent years, there have been much more young people wishing to enter higher educational institutions, and this is because today, when looking for a job, even not the most prestigious job seekers are faced with the fact that the employer needs an employee with a higher education diploma. The knowledge that is given in schools is often not enough for admission to universities, and therefore many are wondering how to prepare for higher education
