Mattel - the same company that was once branded as being extremely sexist in positioning its flagship doll, the blonde Barbie - is now at the forefront of adapting its dolls to - literally - every taste. The new doll is officially gender-neutral, and it can portray both a girl and a guy, either one of them, or both at once.
“Toys reflect culture, and as our world continues to move towards the positive impact of inclusiveness, we feel it's time to create a doll that can't be labeled in any way,” said Kim Gulmon, senior vice president of the department. on doll design at Mattel.
The dolls will be offered in several skin tones, and each doll, in turn, will have a wig with long hair, a skirt, pants, three types of shoes, glasses and other accessories. All the details of the clothes are made as gender-neutral as possible, however, like the very appearance of the dolls. "The lips of the dolls are not too full, the eyelashes are not too long, the jaw is not too wide," the famous TIME magazine writes about the doll. "There are no more big-breasted Barbies and Kens with wide shoulders."
For some time now, in the world of children's goods, there has been an intensified struggle between parents and toy manufacturers over the issue of gender. Most of all, of course, got Mattel - parents began to send letters, organize campaigns and pickets against dolls, which, in their opinion, humiliate the dignity of girls and boys and prevent them from accepting themselves as they are. It was not only about gender, but also about body shape, race, height, and the fact that modern Barbies and Kenes are too sexuality.
Large companies had no choice but to listen. For example, relatively recently, Disney removed the words "for boys" and "for girls" from the tags of their costumes, so that any girl could dress in a Captain America costume (or a boy in a Belle costume) without a twinge of conscience and feel calm. Last year, Mattel also ditched separate stands for boys and girls, placing their toys simply in the “toys” section, so dolls and cars are now side by side in stores.
These dolls are still supposed to be sold at a price of $ 29.99 apiece with the slogan "A line of dolls designed to stay away from labels and invite everyone to play." Thus, the company relies on the fact that the whole world accepts tolerance and has a positive attitude towards gender self-determination.
The dolls will go on sale in Mattel's home country, the US, where, according to a 2017 study, 76% of parents approve when their daughters play "boy games" and 64% approve if their sons choose more girlish activities.
