At the end of February 1979, Alexander Orlov's film "The Woman Who Sings" with Alla Pugacheva in the title role was released on the screens of the Soviet Union. The picture turned out to be extremely successful, and the performer was even named the best actress of the year according to the results of a poll by the magazine "Soviet Screen". It is not surprising that Alexander Stefanovich, having decided to make a film about a singer with a difficult fate, initially saw Alla Borisovna in her role. But not even a few days of filming had passed when Pugacheva was replaced by her eternal rival, Sofia Rotaru.
Capricious star
Alexander Stefanovich, starting to shoot the film, counted on at least the same success as “The Woman Who Sings”. Inviting Alla Pugacheva to the main role, he even tried to forget his personal grievances, because by that time his family with the Prima Donna had already collapsed, and the singer had a new favorite, ready to worship her female charm.
On the very first day of shooting, the Prima Donna allowed herself to be late, for which she immediately received a reprimand. Perhaps, if she was immediately involved in the work, the scandal could have been avoided. However, Alla Borisovna allowed herself the behavior of a real capricious star. The clothes prepared for her by the costume designers did not suit Pugacheva, she decided to act in the coat that she herself purchased.
The second director decided to report the problem to Alexander Stefanovich, who was busy filming other episodes at that time. According to him, the second director was a very intelligent woman, but no longer young, and he asked her to explain to the leading actress that the film was being worked on according to the approved script, and the costumes played an important role for the whole picture.
Of course, the woman followed the instructions and tried to explain the nuances of the filming to the singer, but Pugacheva's reaction could discourage anyone. Alla Borisovna, according to Stefanovich, asked: "Do you not like my coat?" And then, without waiting for an answer, she said that she also did not like the coat that the second director herself was wearing. And then she pulled the woman by the leather coat, literally tearing it in two.
Replacing an actress
Alexander Stefanovich failed to settle the incident. It turns out that Alla Pugacheva managed to turn the entire film crew against herself. Almost all of its members refused to work with the Prima Donna. When Stefanovich turned to the director of "Mosfilm" Nikolai Sizov for help, he honestly said that if the picture was closed because of a scandal, then Stefanovich, as a director, could consider his career over. Nikolai Trofimovich and offered to replace the leading actress.
It was then that it was decided to invite Sofia Rotaru. By the way, she refused the first offer. The fact is that it was at that time that she began to have health problems, and the doctors then forbade the performer to sing. The script was specially changed for Rotaru, and after meeting the second version, she still gave her consent to the shooting.
The singer was not capricious while working on the picture and even easily accepted the dramatic changes in her appearance and style proposed by the team. The folklore image was replaced by a fashionable style with spectacular squares and bright makeup. The first experience of working with the "Time Machine" forced the performer to reconsider not only the stage image, but also to change the view of her own work.
It is unlikely that Alla Pugacheva ever regretted the missed opportunity to star in the film "Soul". Perhaps it was the discord with Alexander Stefanovich that forced her to do everything not to take part in the filming of his film.
The musical melodrama "The Woman Who Sings" became a film debut for Alla Pugacheva and made a splash in 1979, gathering 55 million viewers and becoming the leader of the box office. But what happened behind the scenes of this film was more interesting than the plot of the film. It turns out during filming The prima donna made a hoax because of which the composer Alexander Zatsepin, the author of the famous songs from this film, did not communicate with her for many years …
