Galicia (Galicia) - "end of the world", as the region was called in ancient times. This area is famous for its insanely green forests and fields, magnificent historical monuments of ancient culture and stunningly beautiful coastline. These territories are located in the northwestern part of Spain. In the east, these lands are bordered by Asturias, Castile and Leon, and in the south by Portugal.
The name Galicia comes from the Latin "Gallaecia", as the Celtic tribes were once called. The ancient Celts were the first civilization to be found in these territories. In the 2nd century BC, these lands were captured by the Roman legions. Until now, not so many have survived as monuments of the Roman Empire: only the Roman bridge, the fortress walls in Lugo and the Tower of Hercules (Torre de Hercules) - the only Roman lighthouse in the world that has survived to this day.
At the beginning of the 9th century, the burial place of one of the apostles of Jesus Christ, James (Apostol Santiago), was discovered in Galicia. Thanks to this historical fact, the city of Santiago de Compostela acquired the status of one of the three holy cities in the world and became a place of pilgrimage for millions of pilgrims from all over the world.
