Notting Hill - this is one of the most famous districts of London, and not only because of the film of the same name, but also because on its streets on the last Sunday of August is held grand carnival … One of the largest and most colorful carnivals in the world, which proves: the more peoples of cultures gather in one city, the more … problems? No. All the more fun and costumes!
A hundred years ago, no one could have imagined Notting Hill such an exotic spectacle as a carnival. At the beginning of the last century, it was an ordinary quiet sleeping area, inhabited by reserved Englishmen. But after the war, everything changed: the area destroyed by the bombing was built up with cheap slums, and immigrants flooded here. Jamaicans, Brazilians, Arabs - whoever was there! The area became ethnically dysfunctional, racial clashes became more frequent, and in 1959 immigrants gathered for a carnival to rally against the difficulties in a new place. They were soon supported by local hippies, and in 1964 they all went together for the first time to the Notting Hill Carnival - the one we know.
The action, which began partly in protest, has become a hallmark of London over the years. At one time, the Notting Hill carnival was the second in the world after the Brazilian one: it attracted up to 2 million spectators! But in recent years, the audience is usually at least a million, and each carnival brings the city 93 million euros. Every August, participants leave Notting Hill and, dancing and singing, in colorful costumes and brightly colored feathers, parade into Hyde Park.
"Notting Hill 2012"will take place in a couple of days. The London authorities are afraid of unrest (after the recent riots). Once they even wanted to ban the carnival, but many people stood up for it, including Prince Charles. They are sure: a grandiose mosaic of peoples inhabiting London, one way or another, will come to an agreement, and the carnival will not hurt in this matter.
