These incredibly cute looking creatures are native to Japan. There they live in subalpine and northern evergreen forests on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu. The Japanese dwarf flying squirrel is quite small - its tiny body is usually fifteen to twenty centimeters in length. These squirrels have a luxurious fluffy tail, about ten to fifteen centimeters long.

Apparently, during the day, these funny creatures hide in their houses. They usually arrange them in conifers. At night, they go out to have a snack with some kind of buds, leaves, bark, fruits and various seeds.

The flying squirrel is an exclusively forest animal. These animals spend almost their entire life in the crowns and hollows of tall trees. Flying squirrels prefer mainly deciduous forests, less often mixed ones.

Flying squirrels are similar in appearance to an ordinary small short-eared squirrel. It is only between their front and hind legs that they have a wide furry fold of skin. This is their flying membrane, it plays the role of a parachute and partly a supporting surface when jumping.

The head of these squirrels is round, blunt-nosed. On the muzzle there are large and convex black bead eyes. They look like this because flying squirrels are nocturnal animals. Their ears are round, without tassels. Flying squirrels have short legs, and their claws are curved and very sharp, because squirrels move mainly along tree trunks.

Flying squirrels are the owners of luxurious fur coats. Their fur is thicker and softer than that of ordinary squirrels, the coat is incredibly silky and delicate to the touch.

Despite the fact that this animal is called a "flying squirrel", these unique animals do not actually fly. The Japanese dwarf flying squirrel can cover a fairly large distance of about one hundred meters at a time using its natural parachute. So they move between trees or escape from predators.

It turns out that these adorable little creatures mate twice a year. This usually occurs between May and July. Females bear cubs for about a month. In the litter, as a rule, there are from two to five squirrels.

Flying squirrels are fed during the first six weeks of their life. They are very attentive and gentle mothers who take very touching care of their cubs. Scientists do not yet have information on how male flying squirrels treat the offspring.

Fluffy cuties live for about thirteen years. These unique squirrels are incredibly quick-witted and sociable, and besides, they quickly get used to the owner. Therefore, today these animals are very popular as exotic pets.
