Steph Tugood never dreamed of owning a whole business, the subject of which is rat art. The idea came to her during the tragic events in her life. She lost one of her pets in 2018. Captain Jack Sparrow, that was the name of her rat, underwent surgery, after which he could not get out of anesthesia and died. Steph was there and made a few of his footprints as a souvenir.
“I thought it would be great if the rest of my boys did something similar. I took a few mini-paintings to paint and they created memorabilia for me,”Thugood said about how it all started. Steph also loves taking pictures of her rats, her hobby. So she photographed her pets next to their little artwork. Placing them on the network, she attracted the attention of people and many wanted to buy masterpieces of rat art.
Steph the rats have their own page on social networks. There are 12 painters in her art group. Thugood always emphasizes that her pets are first of all friends for her, and only then artists.
“They are my best friends, and they will not spend their entire lives on paint, no matter how high the demand for their art is now,” she wrote on her Facebook page. “Some boys have targeted training, they paint with a brush or paws. We even have a miniature dexterity course some of them are pretty good at!"
Steph further clarifies that although there are more pictures of her rats on the page on the network, she does not want to focus on this alone. “I don't want to use them just for art and my own profit - I strive to keep rats as pets. I am concerned about their well-being. I am also interested in sharing what my boys do outside of painting,”the woman explained.
Steph sells a variety of products featuring his pets, such as coasters, key rings, hair ties, and more. However, there are currently no ads available on their Etsy store. It turns out that people bought up everything they had in stock. Steph even ran out of canvases for her little artists!
“I am placing an order this week and hopefully I will be able to schedule pre-orders soon,” Thugood wrote on Facebook.
