Argentine photographer Gustavo Germano - the author of the nagging project Ausencias ("Absence"), created by him based on the materials of photo albums of fourteen families from Argentina and Brazil. All these families lost loved ones in the "Dirty War" - the military dictatorship that was established in Argentina in 1976.

In 1969, Gustavo Hermano (pictured left) and his three brothers posed together for a family portrait. A few years later, Gustavo's older brother, Eduardo Hermano (right), was kidnapped during the "Dirty War" - as the crimes of the military dictatorship in 1976-1983 were later named. So the story of Hermano's own family inspired him to create a project in memory of all those who went missing during that difficult time.

Eduardo was one of thirty thousand people who were kidnapped, tortured and brutally killed during the reign of the military junta. Then ten thousand people were physically destroyed, another sixty thousand were detained and tortured. The junta's victims include students, Marxists, journalists and left-wing activists. The military junta fell only in 1983 after the war between Great Britain and Argentina over control of the Falkland Islands.

As part of the project, Gustavo decided to compare two photographs - the first, archived, and the second, taken today in the same surroundings. How orphaned "today's" photographs look! In the place where a man stood more than thirty years ago, there is only a frightening emptiness … The heroes of the pictures have grown, someone has grown old, someone has matured, but only those who are no longer with them will forever remain the same as they managed to capture their photographer even before the terrible events began.

The photographs taken these days look so orphaned …

Another British photographer Julian Germain presented project Generations, which aims to show multiple generations within the same family. Each photo shows four to five people, ranging from great-grandfathers and great-grandmothers to grandchildren and granddaughters.
