Imagine an empty, empty city where there is not a single person. Empty houses, workplaces and public places, empty streets and parks. There is not a single human soul. No life. Rather, there is no human life, but there is an animal.

Mikel Uribetxeberria's photo project "Animalia" is a series of animals in an unusual habitat for them, but familiar to humans. One gets the impression that animals have come to replace the human living race, which will not understand where they were, and what to do about it.

Pictures from the Animalia series were taken in gloomy rooms, hotel rooms, abandoned houses, on empty stairs, near an escalator, where, if, by shouting, one could hear the echo of one's own voice. The gorilla sits thoughtfully on the bed and waits for people to come to clean the room. At the station, the coyote is waiting for the train. The business battleship is discontentedly rushing about its newly acquired possessions. Animals are either uncomfortable, cold, or anxious about the human environment. They are strangers here. They will not replace people, and the comfort that a person needs is alien to an animal.

Photographer from the Basque country Mikel Uribetxeberria with his project "Animalia" shows how hard it will be for our smaller brothers in a city among civilization if they switch places with people. This is a kind of manifesto against those who keep animals in apartments, in the midst of civilization and progress. Animals must be free - this is the hidden message of photographer Mikel Uribetxeberria.
