Video: Game of Thrones Reality Characters: Historical Figures Who Could Become Muses of George Martin
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
The final season has already delighted fans from all over the world with the release of the first episode, and therefore the pages on the Internet are full of interesting and not very articles with a detailed analysis of trailers, various moments from the series itself, around which for several years in a row disputes and intrigues have not subsided, who, finally sit on the Iron throne. But let's digress from this for a minute and go on a short tour of history, where we will try to consider in detail the characters from the fantastic saga of George Martin and find their supposed real historical prototypes that could inspire (or actually inspired) the author to create them.
1. Jon Snow - William the Conqueror
Perhaps it's worth starting with one of the most iconic characters in the entire saga, namely, Jon Snow. Those who closely follow the history and development of this character have seen exactly how he turns from a ridiculous bastard into almost the greatest leader of his people. Isn't it one of the historical conquerors? And, perhaps, our defender from the Wall has the greatest resemblance to William the Conqueror. This historical character was rather brutal, but at the same time decisive and warlike. He took the English throne from King Harold in 1066, establishing his own order. As you know, it is these characters that become key in many television series based on historical, and in our case on fantasy ancient motives. Wilhelm, according to historians, was the illegitimate son of Robert of Normandy. Doesn't it look like anything? In addition, it was in the name of his father that Wilhelm conquered more and more lands. It should be noted that John is a rather colorful figure, and therefore he still willingly fits the image of Henry VII, who, having returned from exile, quickly took the throne in his hands, as well as Prince Charlie from Bonn.
2. Khal Drogo - Attila Gunn
When it comes to the world-famous commander who, being a native of the pastures and steppes of Mongolia, rode his horse across the world, covering it with his glory, we immediately imagine the well-known Attila. It was his image that probably formed the basis for the character of Jason Momoa, who played Khal Drogo, one of the most striking and undisclosed characters in the Martin universe. It should also be noted that Attila himself was engaged to a princess from distant lands, Honoria, who, in turn, agreed to this alliance, just to get rid of her brother, the Roman emperor Valentine III, whom she apparently hated with all her heart. And for those who still have little coincidences, we recall that Attila died in the prime of his life because of a gorgeous woman. Isn't it a real Dothraki soap opera?
3. Jaime and Cersei Lannister - Anna and George Boleyn
The scoundrels from the lion's family (as we used to see and call them), perhaps, are the prototypes of such real personalities as Anna and her brother George Boleyn. It is known from historical sources that Anna was the wife of King Henry VIII, but not everything was so smooth among the crowned heads. Alas, their marriage quickly deteriorated, and therefore, in a fit of loneliness and in the desire to find solace, Anna pays attention to her magnificent and radiant brother. During Anne Boleyn's trial in 1536, she was accused of treason and also attributed to "incest," an incestuous relationship with her own brother George. Of course, the couple denied all these accusations, but according to modern historians, most of these stories were true. In addition, Henry himself was not averse to getting rid of his current queen and being next to a new passion, and therefore a lot of secrets and intrigues swirl around this family couple, as in the most real and quite real Game of Thrones.
4. Daenerys Targaryen - Cleopatra
Perhaps one of the most undisclosed characters in the television series is the mother of dragons. The book devotes much more time to her lineage, and also tells the story of the Targaryen family. Recall that this ancient family practiced incest as something absolutely normal, thereby maintaining the purity of their ancestry and blood. Doesn't it look like anything? For example, the traditions of Ancient Egypt, where this was not only not forbidden, but also was a kind of norm. It is known that Cleopatra was the daughter of Ptolemy XII and Cleopatra V, who, according to historians, was closely related to him and, most likely, was his own sister or niece. After his death, Cleopatra became the queen of Egypt and ruled along with her brother Ptolemy XIII, who, by the way, was her future husband. But, alas, further incest relations were not destined to come true, because, in the war with Rome and Cleopatra herself, Ptolemy drowned in the Nile, leaving his sister to rule in splendid isolation. Very reminiscent of Daenerys, who, through her ignorance, was drawn into an incestuous relationship with Jon Snow. We can only hope that Daenerys will not, like his real prototype, while away the days in the company of royal animals.
5. Robert Baratheon - William II
A ruthless, fearsome and terrifying king who loves the echo of war - this description is perfect not only for Robert Baratheon, but also for his possible real-life William II. Note that the children of William turned out to be good for nothing and could not rule worthy of the legacy of their father, thereby staining the crown with dishonorable and sometimes stupid acts. This is very reminiscent of the story of the children of Robert Baratheon, who were not adapted to such a complex business as government. Just like Robert himself, William died in the woods while hunting. Only if Robert himself was struck by drunkenness and bragging, coupled with a brutal wild boar, then William received an arrow in his heart and was left to die in the forest alone, since all his accompanying people fled in panic. Modern historians describe this king as a violent, ruthless soldier who lacked social adaptation and self-control, as well as possessed a low level of piety, religiosity and morality. It remotely reminds Robert himself that, without even hiding it, he showed amazing disrespect for his own wife, children and the city itself, preferring a cheerful and riotous lifestyle.
6. Faceless - Venetian assassins
You didn't think that you could do without an interesting backstory for such very exciting characters as the characters from the Black and White House in Braavos, which are otherwise called Faceless? It is believed that the author of the book was inspired by the Council of Ten, which actually existed in the 15th century, which was located in Venice. According to surviving records, legal fees, and the 1899 book Poisonous Novels and Wars, the Council was only approached when absolutely necessary. For example, when it was necessary to kill someone with a special, sophisticated method. The book contains real records with instructions and methods of murders, the reasons for this, as well as the amount paid to the performers. In addition, the Council independently took the decision to kill or pardon a particular person, and was also extremely resourceful in its methods. In particular, historians note their extraordinary love for secret chambers and poisons.
7. Margaery Tyrell - Maria Tek
Finally, it is worth remembering such a striking character as Margaery from the Tyrell house. As we all remember, she madly dreamed of becoming a queen, and therefore went to this in any way, even if her fiancé could turn out to be an insane and dishonorable killer. Roughly the same story happened with a real person named Maria Tek. She was born in 1867 and belonged to a fairly wealthy but unremarkable royal house. Her only opportunity to "break out into the people" was to marry the future king of England. Her future fiancé was supposed to be Prince Albert Victor, who was nicknamed "Eddie" by the common people. In fact, Albert was far from the ideal representation of the king: the commoners liked to talk about his explosive and insane nature, and therefore it is quite possible that it was he who formed the basis of the famous urban legend of Jack the Ripper. But Mary did not see any problem in this at all. Alas and ah, but her plans were not destined to come true: the prince died of pneumonia in his twenty-eight years. True, he had a younger brother named George, who was described as a very calm and even melancholic boy, whose only hobby was collecting collectible stamps. In 1893, Mary married him, having been married in the royal chapel at St James's Palace. Reminds me of Margaery's story, only with a happier ending, right?
And in continuation of the theme of the favorite characters of the cult series, which the heroes of "Game of Thrones" have tried on, thanks to their fans. Believe it or not, you haven’t seen them like this yet.

They've never been seen like this: Game of Thrones characters reincarnated as 1930s gangsters
When serials are shot based on famous books, the noise of the jubilant crowd cannot be avoided. And while some angrily express their indignation, others, at this time, lifting the heroes to a pedestal, each time come up with something new with their images. The same fate befell the characters of the famous epic "Game of Thrones". This time the heroes of the cult saga were "transferred" to America in the 1930s, making them first-class gangsters in the style of "The Godfather". Believe me, you have not seen such Daenerys Targaryen and Cersei Lannister yet

True, modern portraits of some of them are rather strange and unusual. Well, Jeanne d * Arc and Queen Elizabeth could not look like the artist Christa Palazzolo painted them
