June 5 marks the 80th anniversary of the famous Polish actress Barbara Brylska, who won the hearts of millions of viewers after starring in The Irony of Fate. She is unlikely to celebrate her anniversary - 5 years ago she admitted that birthdays for her are no longer holidays, but every new year she has lived is like an abyss. Until recently, she was full of strength and energy, took part in the filming of television projects and gave interviews, but in the past few years she became a recluse and, according to her, completely lost interest in life. 2018 was a year of turmoil for her, and recently they started talking about the artist struggling with a serious illness.
Galoshes of happiness
In fact, the actress turned 80 years old on May 29, but she is already used to being congratulated a week later. In her passport, the date of birth is June 5, 1941. Barbara explained the reasons for the confusion as follows: "".
In her youth, Barbara was fond of painting, studied at an art lyceum and dreamed of becoming an artist. Her further fate was decided by chance: once the director Anthony Bohdzevich came to their lyceum, who was looking for young actors for his film Galoshes of Happiness, and the 15-year-old schoolgirl got a cameo role. After that, she was advised to enter a higher theater school.
Widespread fame came to her in the mid-1960s. after her role as Ramses's concubine in Pharaoh, which received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Since then, they began to invite her to shoot not only in Poland, but also in Yugoslavia, the German Democratic Republic and the USSR. Soviet viewers saw her back in the late 1960s - early 1970s. in the films "Liberation" and "Cities and Years".
Finest hour
The Polish melodrama "Anatomy of Love", where Brylska starred in very frank scenes, caused a great resonance. For this, many condemned the star, some critics were even sure that this film would ruin her film career, but the actress's popularity only grew. In the USSR, "Anatomy of Love" was shown in an abridged version, but it was in this film that Eldar Ryazanov noticed it.
All-Union fame fell on her in the mid-1970s, when Brylska played the role of Nadia Sheveleva in the film "The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!", Which divided her life into before and after. For this work, the actress received the State Prize of the USSR, but at home they turned away from her after that. There "Irony of Fate" was not popular, and when Brylska became the idol of millions of Soviet viewers, she ceased to be the people's favorite of Poland. She appeared less and less in Polish cinema, but she was invited to shoot in Czechoslovakia, Bulgaria and the GDR.
Black line
The 1990s were the worst for the actress. After the collapse of the Union, Brylsk practically stopped acting in films, but this was not the most difficult test for her. In 1993, her 20-year-old daughter Basya died in a car accident, and the actress could not come to terms with this loss. The next few years passed in a daze. Her marriage to the doctor Ludwig Kosmal broke up, Barbara drowned her grief in alcohol and completely lost her interest in life. She was forced to pull herself together only by the thoughts of her teenage son - she admitted that if it had not been for him, she would probably have killed herself.
For 3 years, Barbara practically did not leave the house and cried all day long. Because of this, her eyelids were so swollen and drooped that she later had to seek help from a plastic surgeon. Those 20 years, when her daughter was with her, the actress later called the happiest in her life. She said: "".
Return to screens and new challenges
In the 2000s, Barbara Brylska again began acting in films. Thoughts about her son made her come back to life and pursue a career. Even after a long pause, the audience did not forget their favorite actress. She was invited to shoot not only in Poland, but also in Russia and Ukraine. Until 2009, the actress continued to actively act in films both at home and in Russia. In 2007 the film “Irony of Fate. Continuation , after which there was a new surge in her popularity.
And in adulthood, Brylska looked all the same charming and spectacular. She was often invited to various television projects, documentaries were shot about her, and she was interviewed. In 2014, after a 5-year hiatus, she starred in the musical fairy tale "The Secret of the Four Princesses", and at the moment this role is the last in her filmography.
In 2016, having met her 75th birthday, the actress admitted that her birthday is no longer a holiday for her. She left Warsaw for a dacha 80 km from the city and confessed to reporters: "". She continued to call and invite to the shooting, but she refused all offers.
2018 was the most difficult year for the actress since the premature departure of her daughter: one after another, her closest people passed away - the 99-year-old mother and ex-husband, the father of her children, Ludwig Kosmal. After that, Barbara felt completely lonely and broken, because after the divorce, she no longer married and lived alone. She was always very energetic, but these losses crippled her. Brylska admitted: "". Sometimes she didn't even have anyone to talk to, because her son does not visit her as often as she would like.
Recently, Barbara Brylska has practically stopped leaving the house at all. During the pandemic, she tried to spend more time in the country, in nature, away from people. Recently, information appeared in the media that the actress is struggling with a serious illness - she is being treated for cancer.
When asked about the disease, she replied: "". True, in another interview, Brylska denied information about the disease. In any case, I would like to wholeheartedly wish the wonderful actress and beautiful woman good health and many years to come!
