He was called the last romantic of Soviet cinema, she was awarded the title "Best Moldovan Cinema Actress of the XX century." They were never married, but the connection between them was never interrupted. There were quarrels, there were partings, but the thinnest thread remained that tightly tied the fate of director Emil Loteanu and his actress Svetlana Toma.
Twists of fate
Seventeen-year-old Svetlana Fomicheva, after leaving school, was preparing to enter the Faculty of Law. Meeting with Mikhail Badikov and Emil Loteanu made her change her plans, and then her whole life. She gave her phone number to the director, and during the auditions she recited "Our Tanya is crying loudly" and was approved for the role of Joanna in the film "Red Glades".
Dad did not support his daughter's intention to act in films, rightly hoping that she would take up her mind and still become a law student. Emil Loteanu promised to return his daughter at the end of filming safe and sound and not interfere with her studies.
Towards excellence
During the filming, there were legends about Lotianu's exactingness and even harshness. He stopped at nothing to achieve the necessary frame reliability. Svetlana was not accustomed to rudeness and screams, so the director's sudden outbursts of dissatisfaction were very difficult for her. But after the end of the shooting day, Emil turned into a gentle, caring and attentive man. As soon as she fell ill, he tirelessly treated her, monitored the timely intake of medicines and even fed her.
He suggested that she take a pseudonym, considering the girl's surname unsuitable for a future star. Svetlana Toma (the surname of the French great-grandmother) appeared in the credits for the film.
The former schoolgirl did not immediately realize that the director was caring for her. He gave flowers, cooked exotic dishes, was sincerely interested in her hobbies.
But at the same time, he could commit acts that frightened Svetlana in earnest. He could leave her alone in an unfamiliar company and disappear. Then she turned out to be guilty of the incident.
Svetlana Toma did not know yet that the relationship with the director Loteanu would last a lifetime. It will be interrupted, they will not see each other and communicate, but they will be there again and again.
She no longer thought about entering the law school, but entered the Leningrad Institute of Culture for a special course, where they prepared for the Chisinau theater.
Strange marriage
The relationship was sometimes incredibly romantic, sometimes excruciating. A conflict could flare up from the slightest spark. When Loteanu again approved Svetlana for the main role, she was already busy filming another picture in Leningrad. But the actress was looking forward to a call from Emil with an invitation to shoot. Later it turned out that Leningrad colleagues simply did not show the actress the telegram, fearing that she would disrupt the entire schedule. Lotyanu did not listen to her excuses. He simply considered her a traitor, shot another actress in his film, and broke off relations with his muse.
They have not seen each other for about a year. During this time, Svetlana managed to graduate from the institute and get married. They studied with Oleg Lachin on the same course, and later worked in the theater in Tiraspol. They did not pay any attention to each other, so the marriage proposal came as a complete surprise to the actress. However, like any girl, she dreamed of a family and children, a snow-white veil and a romantic wedding tale. All this she had with Oleg. True, he was almost immediately taken into the army, but he was released to the theater for performances in which Oleg was engaged.
Soon Loteanu summoned the actress to shoot in the film Lautara, finding in the film a small role for her husband as well. When the daughter of Svetlana and Oleg was only six months old, Lachin died, having lost a lot of blood after being hit by the blade of the boat. Svetlana often heard in a dream how her husband was calling her. Saved her work: she starred in Jacob Burgiu in the film "Home for Seraphim". And in life there was Emil Loteanu again.
Happy movie
He invited her to star in the role of Rada in the film "Tabor Goes to Heaven". The conditions were difficult: the Carpathians, dust, a gypsy camp. But Svetlana's nerves at some point could not stand it, she packed her things and left for Moscow, in full confidence that the director would remove her from the role. After returning to the site, a grandiose scandal awaited her, but the role remained with her. And the director began to treat the actors differently. True, he communicated with the obstinate actress exclusively through third parties. The film became happy for both, won many awards, enjoyed success abroad.
When the actress is asked about her parting with Loteanu, she replies that she never parted with him. I never wanted to be his wife. They just became part of each other. And it was impossible to change it.
When the director was diagnosed with the last stage of cancer, Svetlana Toma and the ex-wife of Lotyanu Galina Belyaeva began to take care of him. He passed away on April 18, 2003. And Svetlana still talks about him with tenderness and warmth. It seems that their connection was not interrupted, but only took on a different form.
Even the most sincere feelings do not always lead to marriage. and her loyalty irritated him.
