In the spring of 1908, in one of the most popular places in Paris at the hippodrome, the crowd was attracted not at all by the races, but by the appearance of three ladies in unusual outfits. The dresses so tightly fitted the figures of the girls that the offended wives in a hurry took their husbands and sons away. Be that as it may, these three dresses marked the beginning of the most feminine silhouette of the 20th century, and the name of their creator was forever deleted from the history of fashion.
Jeanne Victorine Margaine-Lacroix was exactly the dressmaker whose dresses caused a public outcry. The fact is that at the beginning of the 20th century, women's underwear consisted of a full-fledged corset, skirt and shirt. And the models offered by Jeanne Victorine meant almost complete absence of these elements of the toilet. Therefore, the public at the hippodrome was indignant at the fact that the girls allowed themselves to go out almost “half naked”.
Long before lycra and shaping underwear appeared in the fashion industry, Margaine-Lacroix used silk jersey. This fabric was dense, but at the same time, it fell effectively in the right place. In addition, in each model, a piece of fabric was beautifully fixed at the waist, visually reducing the figure.
Needless to say, girls in such outfits attracted everyone's attention. In the same 1908, a film was shot called "The Directoire gown". Its main character was a girl in a "half-naked" outfit. Everyone who saw her forgot about everything: the firefighters did not pay attention to the burning house, the policeman released the criminal.
It is said that a similar incident happened to Winston Churchill. The cabman transporting the British Prime Minister stared at one of the girls in a tight dress, and his horse crashed into another carriage. After this incident, the name Margaine-Lacroix ceased to be mentioned in the headlines of articles, they did not even write about her in footnotes. Thus, the name of this dressmaker was forever deleted from the history of fashion.
Of course, at the beginning of the 20th century, not everyone risked going out into the street in a "half-naked" dress. However, it took only 50 years to pass, and now Marilyn Monroe appeared in public in a "naked" dress.
