The portfolio of artist Claire Scully is full of drawings, the main theme of which is the conflict and harmonious relationship between the urban environment and the natural environment. The Bejewelled series stands out against their background in that you don't know what to do in the first place: to look at the drawing as a whole or to carefully study the smallest details that make it up.
"Bejewelled" is a very distinctive style of animals. At first glance, you can't understand whether they are cut out of paper, or woven in the manner of lace, or are they still drawn. The features of the drawn animals are, firstly, in the use of one color, and secondly, in a very high degree of detail. one can only wonder how long it took the artist to work through and finish each image. To date, Claire Scully's collection contains "portraits" of an octopus, an owl, a tiger, a wolf and a titmouse.
The artist says that she draws inspiration for her work, observing the relationship "man - nature" every day. It is worth getting acquainted with at least one interview of Claire Scully in order to understand: she simply adores nature and all living things. "I love going to the zoo and seeing happy animals. Finding mushrooms. Looking at the titmice. Watching the squirrels. Finding beautiful feathers," Claire says. The list of what the author dislikes is also directly related to the natural world: "I don't like cold windy and rainy winter evenings - poor birds! Go to the zoo and see bored animals. There are mushrooms. Hear that some people call squirrels rats with fluffy tails ".
The images from the Bejewelled series were liked by the public, so the artist uses them as prints for bags, T-shirts and other things.
Claire Scully lives in London, she is 31 years old. She graduated from Central Saint Martins in 2006 with an MSc in Communication Design. Since then, the author has been working as a freelancer and, I must say, quite successfully: among her clients are the New York Times, The Guardian, Penguin books, Random house.
