South Californian photographer Ken Merfeld is one of many "charmed wanderers" looking for new ways to express their vision of the world, show their view of beauty. He not only takes pictures in retro style, but takes them as photographers did before 1880. With glass plates, complex chemical mixtures and vintage models of cameras.
For many years now, the retro style has captivated and fascinated artists from all over the world. How many retro works have been done in the last decades! From paintings to watches, bags and even cups.
The author himself says that “the world is moving very quickly into the future, towards electronic images. I prefer to slow down the passage of time and work in the primordial photography technique. " Ken Merfeld admits that "there is something magical about flipping through albums of old photographs." Each such photograph is filled with "its own, special aura." The artist himself says about his works: "They have the elegant simplicity of the nineteenth century, they let people know that I would like to find a new way to what I photograph."
The wet plate collodion process was discovered in 1851 when photography was taking its first steps. This is a very painstaking method, its main difficulty lies in the fact that during photography, the entire plate on which the image will appear must remain wet.
Ken Merfeld shoots literally everything, be it flowers, models or even ordinary people. Each object "caught" by him turns into a small picture, similar to a pencil sketch.
You may like it or not, admire it or seem banal, but in any case, Ken Merfeld's retro-style photos will not leave anyone indifferent.
