"Nami" is the name of a wave in Japanese, and is also the name of a photo album by artist Syoin Kajii. "Nami" is a series of photographs of waves that were captured on camera off the coast of Sado Island in Japan. The photographer is a young Buddhist monk named Syoin Kajii, who spent a lot of time observing the sea and its mood in order to capture the bursts of its waves at the right moment.
The temple in which the photographer lives is located on the island of Sado overlooking the sea, and looking at the beauty of nature every day, Syoin Kajii discovered that the sea combines the severity of his father and the tenderness of his mother. The greatness of the sea could not leave him indifferent. This was the impetus for the creation of the "Nami" photo project.
The coastline of Sado Island is about 270 km. Syoin Kajii chose the location based on weather forecasts or news from fishermen. Using a digital camera, he photographed waves while standing in water or on rocks. Sometimes I had to wait for the beauty wave for 5-6 hours, even in a storm.
Syoin Kajii was born in Japan in 1976. For his series of photographs "Nami" he was awarded the first FOIL Award. After receiving the award, he published a photo album, a story about waves with different dispositions, character and strength.
