Penelopiad is a large-scale installation by two American artists Anna Fulmine and Victoria Shahrokh, which refers the viewer to Homer's Odyssey and the story of Odyssey's faithful wife Penelope. According to legend, a woman cunningly tried to get rid of annoying suitors, at a time when Odysseus, who was considered dead by that time, was on dangerous wanderings.
According to Greek mythology, the faithful wife of Odysseus announced that she would choose a husband for herself only when she finished weaving a shroud to her father-in-law Laertes. However, every night the wise woman would dissolve the woven fabric, hoping that her husband would return after twenty years of wandering. This plot, as well as its unexpected interpretation in the novel by the writer Margaret Atwood, inspired the creative duo of young American women to create the installation Penelopiada.
To translate the idea, the artists needed huge cuts of canvas fabric. Chaotically stretched between the walls, floor and vaulted ceiling of the gallery space, they resemble at the same time a shroud, and sails, and snow-white clothes. A curious detail of the installation is the plaster casts of the hands, which seem to hold the structure from below, providing the necessary tension.
Falmin and Shahrokh are the founders and inspirers of the creative association "Lightning and Kinglyface", within which they independently initiate various projects, and also participate in various photography projects as set designers. Lightning and Kinglyface's clients include Barclays, BAFTA's, Bompas & Parr, Cartier, Digital Magazine, Dr. Martins, ENEL, Esquire, Exposure, FHM, Harrods, Hyundai and many others.
A nine-year creative partnership between the American artist duo Wade Kavanaugh and Stephen B. Nguyen has resulted in numerous voluminous installations made from paper and other organic materials. Paper is the main material that Kavanaugh and Nguyen work with.
