Pop art ideologue Andy Warhol died in 1987, but his work lives on. Every now and then in the largest museums in the world there are exhibitions of "new" works of the artist. For example, just now, in 2013, collector Daniel Blau first discovered about 300 previously unknown Warhol drawings dating back to the 1950s.

Blau's find crowned his research in the field of Warhol's work, which has been going on for more than twenty years. Several hundred of the artist's early drawings provide a unique opportunity to trace the formation of Warhol's corporate identity. He already turns to themes and images characteristic of "mature" creativity, despite the fact that fragments from the artist's notebook look much less shocking and loud than his most famous works.

"When it seems to you that you are already familiar enough with the artist, he presents another surprise. These drawings showed me what Warhol grew out of," says Blau himself. The best drawings were included in a book edited by the collector, entitled From Silverpoint to Silverscreen … It will hit the shelves in the coming days; while Louisiana residents can admire the unique work of Warhol at the exhibition, which has already opened at the Museum of Modern Art there.

As critics point out, unlike Warhol's famous pop art paintings, his early drawings are marked by the influence of the great European artists of the early 20th century. In some of the works, one can discern curtsies in the direction of Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, which, according to Blau, will help "rediscover Warhol for a European audience." However, there are also specific Warhol themes - for example, interest in pop culture stars such as the actor James Dean.

Regular readers of Kulturologia.ru often learn something new about Andy Warhol. The scandalous artist now and then becomes the hero of the news: whether because of the Campbell company, which released the Warhol-inspired soup can series, or because of arrivedwhich the painter brought to the auctioneers in 2012. The drawings that Daniel Blau discovered prove once again that interest in Warhol's work is natural: he did not become one of the most influential artists of the generation from scratch, he, as the collector says, “worked hard and achieved his status with hard work, like any another painter."
