Many people don't have the most positive associations with the word “metro”: bustle, crowd, advertising posters and stalls everywhere. But, it's worth going down to the Naples subway (Italy), as a completely different picture appears before your eyes: the metro stations there resemble real works of art.
Over the past 10 years in Naples appeared in 14 art stations. Initially, the city authorities came up with the idea to make the subway transport hubs more attractive. Under the direction of Achille Bonto Oliva, former director of the Venice Biennale, gray metro stations have become art galleries for contemporary art.
More than 90 artists and architects were invited to design them, among whom were such eminent personalities as Karim Rashid, Alessandro Mendini, Michelangelo Pistoletto.
Perhaps one of the most beautiful is the Toledo metro station (the Toledo Metro), which was opened in September 2012. It is located under one of the busiest shopping streets in Naples. The design was developed by the Spanish architect Oscar Taskerts Blanca (Oscar Tusquets Blanca). The dominant theme was “water and light”, which was reflected in an amazing mosaic laid out across the entire surface of the station.
Another city where subway looks like an art gallery - Stockholm.
