The leader of the world proletariat was valued at 4.7 million US dollars. Andy Warhol's work "Lenin" was sold at auction. In addition to the leader, portraits of Monroe and Jacqueline Kennedy went under the hammer.
At the Sotheby's auction, the portrait of Vladimir Lenin, created by the well-known American artist Andy Warhol, was once again realized. The uniqueness of this portrait of the leader of the world proletariat lies in the fact that it was painted in the style of pop art. The portrait, in turn, was based on a very famous photograph of Lenin taken in 1897. At the moment, this photograph is kept in the Central Lenin Museum in Moscow. The auction house estimated Warhol's work with Lenin at $ 3.8-4.5 million. During the auction, the painting was sold at a slightly higher price, having gone under the hammer for 4.7 million.
Other paintings by the American artist were also sold at the Sotheby's auction. They were priced slightly cheaper. Among the most famous works was the painting "Jackie" - a portrait of Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of the 35th US President John F. Kennedy. The portrait was taken after the assassination of the president. The work was exhibited in the largest galleries in the USA, Great Britain and Japan. It was sold for one million dollars.
Warhol's other famous painting of Marilyn Monroe was sold at a recent auction for $ 2.3 million. The peculiarity of this work is that it is silk-screened.
In addition to the work of Andy Warhol, several very interesting lots went under the hammer at Sotheby's. Among them was a sculpture by Chinese artist Ai Weiwei called Grapes. It is a composition of 32 wooden stools connected together to form a sphere. The art project was purchased for 675 thousand dollars.
Andy Warhol is the founder of such a trend in contemporary art as "commercial pop art". Most of Warhol's photographs and paintings in one way or another concern famous politicians and show business stars. A significant part of the work was created using screen printing, which allowed the artist to create many copies of the same images.
