In an effort to emphasize human individuality, surrealist painter Erik Thor Sandberg creates grotesque paintings in which a fine line is traced between virtue and vice. Each of his works is a dialogue between the author and the viewer, fraught with a huge number of questions.
Sandberg paints pictures of various scales, the heroes of which are people. Sometimes the expressions on their faces are full of joy, but most of the time, viewers see hideous caricatures of human stupidity. The figures in the paintings, mostly female, are usually psychologically isolated from the outside world. Looking at the artist's work, one involuntarily recalls paintings by Dutch painters of the 16th century, such as and, who also personified human stupidity.
Thematically complicated works in the new series of the artist's works take his work to a new level in the genre of psychological realism. After the death of his father, Eric began to paint pictures with a pronounced idea - a feeling of helplessness in the face of death.
The artist himself jokes when he is asked to characterize the paintings: “I always answer that I paint naked people who do terrible things to each other. But to be serious, my paintings are allegories that are sometimes associated with my own life. In fact, everything is not as bad as it seems at first glance."
Vanity, vice and virtue are the themes that Eric wanted to reflect in his paintings. He mixes such paradoxical concepts as good and evil, beauty and ugliness. Each viewer can interpret the work in their own way and recreate the original story. The artist's works have repeatedly won the recognition of professionals and outsiders. Maybe it's not so difficult to understand his magical world?
