To describe in general terms to someone the work of the young Canadian artist Winnie Truong, one word is enough - "hair". A girl with commendable performance creates large-scale drawings with colored pencils, the characters of which are almost completely hidden by curls, curls, strands and braids, living their own lives.
When asked how she would describe her work, Vinnie replies: “Usually I tell people that I make very large drawings of hairy faces, and the hair on them becomes a supernatural extension of the hero's personality. My works are about how to challenge the stereotyped concepts of the beautiful and the grotesque, which are firmly coded in our cultural context. Although it's much easier for me to just show those interested in photographs of my drawings on the phone."
Winnie adds that one of the reasons why the hair has an almost hypnotic effect on her and remains the main plot of her drawings is that their texture is ideally correlated with the drawing process itself: each hair is equal to the line that the slate pencil leaves in the amount turning into strands and curls.
In addition, Winnie also devotes a fair amount of time and attention to her own hairstyle: “Washing and combing hair, styling in the morning, the role they play in my image - all this is a laborious and intrusive process. When you think of the artist's overwhelming passion for drawing repetitive lines on paper, there are obvious parallels."
All of Vinnie Truong's works are drawn by hand: colored pencils on paper. When the idea of a new painting is born in her head, the artist starts with a few preliminary sketches. At this stage, she often uses photographs from fashion and hairdressing magazines. She uses the facial expressions of the models and the general atmosphere of the photo shoot as a source of inspiration for her sketches.
Continuing the theme of facial hair that is exciting for young minds, five reasons why a Russian man should wear a beard.
