Eleven percent of the Czech population wants to be the new president became an avant-garde composer Vladimir Franzcovered from head to toe with a tattoo. Franz himself, although happy with this result, is much more concerned with the premiere of his new opera. The composer was somewhat surprised by the excitement around his person - he almost did not engage in self-promotion, so only word of mouth worked into his hands.
We have previously written about radical contemporary artists from the Czech Republic - such as the melancholic photographer Martin Stranka and an outrageous sculptor David Cerny … Their colleague Vladimir Franz grew up in a family not alien to art: his great-grandfather was an outstanding Czech director and animator, author of the famous satirical cartoon "The Hand" Jiri Trnka. Franz himself, in addition to his "political career", writes music for opera and draws.
His appearance, quite naturally, serves as a reason for bewilderment and ridicule: during a televised debate, one of the viewers who called the studio compared the potential president with "a strange creature from Papua New Guinea."
By his own admission, Franz understands almost nothing in public affairs and does not understand economics at all. But the Czech voters do not need this. Tired of corrupt governments trying unsuccessfully to organize capitalism in the former socialist country, Czech citizens are happy to cast their vote as a bright provocateur from politics.
Franz is especially popular with young people. According to polls, if the president was elected by schoolchildren, the composer would get 44 percent of the vote. Even Franz’s opponents agree that it’s not a matter of the candidate’s appearance. "This is not because of the tattoos, but because there is no other choice," they admit. Franz himself also urges not to fan the hype around his appearance. The bigger problem is that the composer is forced to be torn between musical and political careers. Most recently, he had to miss the premiere of his new opera at one of the largest theaters in the Czech Republic in order to go to the debate. However, this was a deliberate choice.
The first round of presidential elections in the Czech Republic is scheduled for January 12-13, 2013.
