Every year in Catalonia, Spain, there is a competition to build a tower from human bodies. The construction of such towers is an independent art form, where the height, beauty and strength of the structure depends on the strength, courage, courage of the participants, and also in many respects on mutual trust.
Teams of participants compete with each other to build the tallest human castle. Every Catalan city has its own team or "Colla", which includes men, women and children. In the construction of human towers ("castells"), a solid pedestal is first formed from densely standing human bodies, with the weaving and joining of the hand, so that this structure can withstand a weight of several tons.
A strong base will make it easier to fall if the tower collapses, which, incidentally, happens very, very often. Human towers reach eight or nine levels, at each of which people stand on each other's shoulders. The uppermost level always consists of children who, dexterously and quickly, like monkeys, climb to the very top. The "Castells" is finally built when a child, who has climbed up, waves his hand to the crowd of subordinates as a sign of victory.
The Living Towers are an ancient national tradition of Catalonia that strengthens the spirit, hardens the body and instills faith in the unity of people.
