Do you think that opera is a boring art that has become obsolete for a long time? Tell this to the thousands of people from all over the world who flock every year to the small Austrian town of Bregenz, which hosts a major opera festival every summer. Bregenzer festspiele, the main platform of which is … floating stage.
Bregenzer Festspiel, in other words, the Bregenz Festival is one of the largest such events in Europe, the origins of which go back to the post-war 1946. But the greatest fame, and not only in theatrical circles, this Festival has received in recent years thanks to its new stage, Seebühne, located in the open air in the middle of the waters of Lake Constance.
Such an arrangement allows the directors not to limit their plans in any way, gives them incredible opportunities both in terms of scenery and in terms of scenography (where is Daniel Arsham with his "Avalanche"!). An example of this is the opera "Aida", staged here in the summer of 2009, a significant part of the action of which took place directly on the water against the background of the huge destroyed Statue of Liberty (it symbolizes the conflict between the concepts of "slavery" and "freedom", revealed in "Aida").
Of course, such a scale of stage action also requires corresponding expenses on the part of the organizers. Fortunately, in Seebühne, not only the stage, but also the auditorium is huge. It is also located in the open air, and is designed for seven thousand people. Just think, an opera hall with 7000 seats !!!
The cost of a ticket to the performance is from 28 to 272 euros (prices for the 2011 festival). So, with 23 performances (again, planned for 2011), the production costs are compensated with a good excess.
But apart from the main floating stage, the Bregenz Festival has several other venues. So during the month that it lasts, on average about a hundred events are held within its framework.
This year's Bregenzer Festspiele will take place from 20 July to 21 August. And its main stage will be occupied by the opera “Andre Chenier”, dedicated to the life of this famous French poet, written by the composer Umberto Giordano and the poet Luigi Illica. It will be directed by renowned British theater and opera director David Pountney.
