"Better than mountains can only be … the sea!" - so say stern men in vests, salty through and through, like herrings, by the sea wind and withered by the sun's rays blindingly reflected from the waves. And still happy - because in the open ocean, off the coast of Australia, in the midst of summer, they celebrate one of the largest maritime holidays in the southern hemisphere: the Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
Sailing ships are the true love of sailors all over the world: only under sail, in union with the wind and waves, a person can feel like a real sailor and a part of the element, and not its conqueror. That is why it was impossible not to arrange a festival in honor of wooden yachts - off the coast of Tasmania, who saw the great captains Abel Tasman and James Cook.
This festival is a biennial: in other words, it is held every two years. In 1994, 180 wooden yachts entered the ocean from Tasmania's largest port, Hobart; this was the beginning of the tradition. Last time, in 2009, there were already 500 ships; the list we saw this year already contains 482 applications - and there is still a week left before the event. The popularity of the festival proves that Australia is truly a land of sailors.
Sailors - and ships. Still, in the center of attention of the participants and guests of the festival are not only sailors, but also their beautiful ships. Proud and slender, like seagulls, they sweep on wing-sails along the green waves, swaying slightly on the soft chest of the ocean. Some of these yachts are more expensive than large, first-class ships - but it's not about the price, but the pristine beauty of the delicate wood and fabric that defy storms and storms.
And although the sea does not forgive mistakes, even it obeys the strong hands and brave hearts of sailors. No matter how far they have swum, a guiding beacon is always waiting for them at home. The Festival of Wooden Ships is one of those festivals that make us imagine the burning stars of the southern seas, black nights and bright days, azure waves and tart wind - and drink to the bottom for those at sea.
