The authors of sculptures and installations, who work with books, have long been accustomed to the fact that when they see their works, the audience is divided into two opposing camps. Some admire the "rebirth" of books and are happy to consider their new application. Others deny the "art of books" as such, believing that literature is created in order to read it - and nothing more. But, despite such an ambiguous attitude towards him, book art continues to live. And the work of Jacqueline Rush Lee is a vivid confirmation of this.
For about twelve years, Jacqueline has been attracted to the intimate, tactile and symbolic qualities of old books. She is interested in the meaning and life story of each book, as well as their ability to be potential means of expression. “By working with books as with canvases or building bricks, I turn them into sculptures that change and redefine the familiar perception of books. By encrypting the formal meaning of books and altering their material and conceptual qualities, I strive to create evocative art forms that offer alternative meanings,”says Jacqueline Rush Lee.
The author says that when choosing books as material for her work, she pays attention primarily not to the content of the publications, but to the history of their relationship with the reader. In this sense, Jacqueline's new books are of little interest. And in publications that have been in the hands of reading lovers, the author always pays attention to the marks, bookmarks and other signs of "communication" between the reader and the book left in the margins, and in his sculptures he always tries to emphasize these moments and draw the viewer's attention to them.
The books that have passed through Jacqueline Rush Lee's studio are no longer readable. However, having lost their original content, they at the same time become sources for new stories. These stories are different from day to day, because each viewer creates them for himself. In any case, Jacqueline is absolutely sure of this.
