Sculptor Geoffrey Gorman creates original models of animals and birds from debris from trees, old clothes and other scrap materials. Without striving for an accurate reproduction of reality, the author combines history, everyday experience and his own rich imagination in his works. And his creations, familiar and unfamiliar at the same time, lure the viewer into the strange and bizarre world of which they are inhabitants.
“Broken tree branches, whitened by the sun and rain, make me think of weathered bones: fingers, legs, spine, ribs. Old strips of fabric act as bandages and clothing, tying all the elements together. Sculptural wax covers the wood frame and joints. I am pleased with the way different objects turn into funny and memorable shapes,”says Jeffrey Gorman.
Along with creating animals, Jeffrey also comes up with a story for each of them. For example, the Paniscus baboon has been living alone in wild forests for a long time and is very happy about it. He used to work at fairs, as evidenced by his coat made from an advertising banner and an old metal collar. At the same time, each viewer can come up with their own story about each of Gorman's characters.
What is the meaning of Jeffrey Gorman's work? Probably, many will be surprised by his answer: “The main idea of my work is … the absence of an idea. I just do what I want to do. " I also hope that viewers will tap their imaginations and come up with their own stories about my creations. In other words, everyone can fill my work with their own ideas."
Geoffrey's sculptures are inspired by the events around him. For example, once he saw ducks on a pond - and after a while he created sculptures of them. Another time, the author reflected on the relationship between humans and monkeys, and these animals appeared in the collection of his works. In addition, many of Jeffrey's ideas are drawn from books.
