Simple photographs can surprise and delight in terms of content, but not in terms of form. The French duo Clark and Pougnaud decided that they needed to bring something original to photography, and came up with the following: they take pictures of people, print the pictures, then cut them out, put them in an artificial environment resembling toy worldand take pictures again.
It's always nice when something else is hidden behind a simple photograph. Still, not everyone is as talented as Donata Wenders, not everyone is able to portray the sincerity of feelings the way she does. Therefore, you have to resort to something else. For example, to costumes and masks, photographing conceptual performances like Ralph Lagua and Keith Leys, “conquerors of the land of love”. Clark and Pougnaud (a man and a woman) created their own toy worlds with real people in them.
The very concept invented by these photographers is unpredictable and surprising, because toy worlds - this is what we lack since childhood, something that we would like to be a part of at least sometimes. But Clark and Pougnaud went even further and came up with several more within the framework of this concept. For example, in the cycle "Voyages d'Amour" they put people from different cultures in one setting. And they completely devoted the cycle “Tribute to Edward Hopper” to their favorite artist Edward Hopper - their photographs completely duplicate his paintings.
Clark and Pougnaud were born in 1963 and 1962 respectively. Both were born in France. Clark grew up in a family of photographers. He opened his studio in the 80s, before that he worked as an assistant to his father. Pougnaud was seriously influenced by her grandmothers, both artists and her mother who works in the theater. Still, it is easier for an artist to develop himself when he lives in a creative family. Since the late 90s, Clark and Pougnaud have worked together. The division of labor is simple - Clark photographs and Pougnaud creates toy worlds, usually made of wood and cardboard.
Various projects dedicated to people in toy worlds, including nude photos and other interesting shots, can be viewed on the duo's website.
