Artist Jason D'Aquino doesn't need huge canvases and multi-color palettes for the creative process. His works fit into tiny squares the size of a matchbox. Although this comparison is too literal, because for some time now matchboxes have become the favorite canvas on which the author prefers to create paintings.
“I have a weakness for old and damaged things and see a certain irony in the transformation of such objects into works of art. I try to take the most unattractive and ordinary surfaces, and with a few hours of concentration and 12 cents spent on graphite, they become things that many crave to have,”- this is how the artist explains the choice of surfaces to paint.
In addition to matchboxes, he also creates paintings on 18th century parchment and pages of ancient books. Of course, finding such material is not easy, so Jason takes a lot of time traveling and searching. It could even be said that the search for such specific canvases is itself an integral and important part of the creative process. But sometimes the artist manages to find genuine treasures of historical value.
All the artist's drawings are made with graphite. Jason claims that he strives for minimalism in everything and is not going to change this style of painting. And the author also hates the computer and works "the old fashioned way" - "just me, a pencil and my brain."
Jason D'Aquino is a miniature painter from New York. Having gained some fame in his homeland, the author set out to conquer Europe: on January 14, his first solo exhibition will open at the Galerie Nordine Zidoun (Luxembourg).
