Do you think totemism is the oldest form of religiosity, which in our time is practically not found? American Jimmy Joe Roche assures that this is not so. And as a proof, he creates large-scale wall sculptures made of paper, which personify the totems of modern American society.
“Traditionally, totems serve to encapsulate the spiritual beliefs of a group of people. Likewise, I have created a series of works that encapsulate the aura of the subculture of which I am a member. From the very beginning, I knew that my works would be great, "growing" up from the ground. A person standing in front of one of my totems is faced with a wavy mass of dripping color and a symmetrical shape,”explains the author.
Each totem is carved, intricate and hand-painted. According to Jimmy Joe Roche, cutting and folding is an internal language of forms, which, due to their multi-layering, open up macrocosmic being. The bright pigments of the totems emit prismatic light. When the eye slides over curved shapes, the illusion of movement is created. “For those who came into contact with them, totems are both defenders and sources of new information about American mythology,” the author is sure. Even at the endless hours of cutting paper elements, Jimmy looks from a philosophical point of view, comparing them to a mantra or meditation. "The process of creating totems is an alchemical transformation of bodily energy into a conceptual talisman that reflects the collective unconscious of Americans."
Jimmy Joe Roche lives and works in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. Holds S. U. N. Y Bachelor's degrees. Purchase College (New York, 2004) and Maryland Institute College of Art (Baltimore, 2008).
